The Gospel - Are We There Yet? (Colossians)

What is the gospel? Literally, it means "Good news"; The Bible reveals to us this Good News, that Jesus Christ came to earth, fully God, fully man, to bring us back into a free and full relationship with God. He did this through his death and resurrection. The entire New Testament reveals this good news, first through the biographical accounts of Jesus' life (the 4 Gospels) and then explained to us through the letters of his followers, the apostles. Through our study in the book of Colossians (one of Paul's letters to a young church), we will discover how rich and expansive the gospel really is, completely transforming our lives today and yet still promising a final fullness in the future.

The Upside Down Kingdom

The Christmas story is one that many of us are familiar with; the birth of Jesus Christ. We've perhaps seen it acted out in pageants or displayed in miniature nativity scenes, shepherds, angels, cattle, Mary, Joseph and the manger. But it isn't simply the literal birth of Jesus that we celebrate at Christmas. It is the fact that his birth was the beginning of a Kingdom, in which Jesus is King. Yet even these words can conjure up familiar ideas of what Kingship and Kingdoms mean. Interestingly, what we find through the Christmas story are clues that the Kingdom of Jesus is unlike any other. In fact, it's not going to far to say that this Kingdom is an upside down Kingdom, built on values that run counter to the ancient world into which Jesus was born, and counter still to our culture today. Join us for the Advent Season at Upper Room, as we explore the true nature of Jesus' Upside Down Kingdom.

Firewood gods

When you hear the word "idol", what comes to mind? Likely for most of us the word "idol" has religious or historical connotations; something made of wood or stone or precious metals. Some of these are preserved in museums, others are still worshipped today. But the truth is, we all have interactions with idols every day by virtue of this fact: we all worship something. We all give our time, energy, imagination and resources to something. The question to ask is this: does that which we hold most precious actually deserve our highest affection? An idol is something that we give our money and time and energy to but which is actually not worthy of it. How do we know what is worthy of our affection? Join us for our series; "Firewood gods".
